Barcelona’s Boqueria Market

Halfway up Barcelona’s most emblematic street, La Ramblas, an assortment of organic colours and aromas attack one’s senses. La Boqueria, as the market is known, is dedicated entirely to food. Its entrance is crammed with fruit stalls. Farther into the labyrinth are butchers and fishmongers and even one stall selling insects for consumption.

In medieval times, owing to its original position outside the fortified walls of Barcelona, campesinos (farmers and their families) would flock to the Boqueria to flog their finest produce.

Today it is frequented by housewives, tourists and international chefs. La Boqueria is simply a shrine for anyone with a passion for all things gastronomical.

Among the many stalls are a couple of great seafood restaurants with a lively clientelle and an affordable Menu del Dia.

Autumn is a good time to go- the market will be full of wild mushrooms, dates and sumptuous virgin tomatoes.
